How are you connected to LeRoy, Pa.? Lived in LeRoy Township from 1958 to 1973; in last sixth grade class to graduate from LeRoy Elementary School in 1969; some ancestors from LeRoy and surrounding townships How did you find this website? A friend notified me about the site Where are you from? Originally from Bradford Co., PA, now live in Virginia Please enter your comments! Wow! Talk about a trip down memory lane! I feel so nostalgic. I really enjoyed the site, especially the photo taken of LeRoy from the hill. The school yard looks so small, or course the new ball field fence does not encompass the whole yard, and Mill Street looks so short. I am glad the old grange hall is being renovated. Sometimes we would have instrumental lessons in the grange instead of in the basement of the school house. Also, I really used to enjoy the holiday lunches the ladies of the grange prepared--they were a real treat compared to packing your lunch everyday. Keep up the good work!

How are you connected to LeRoy, Pa.? My Samuel Rockwell settled in Elba and Canton very early. some of his descendents married and lived in LeRoy and Monroe. They would be my cousins. My branch of this family was from Myron Rockwell. How did you find this website? I visit the area for the Rockwell family reunion and for Daggett Days most years. Where are you from? Our branch of the Lefler/Rockwells left the area in 1909 for NJ and Conn where I was born and grew up. We now live in the Adirondacks. Please enter your comments! If I could do it all again(which of course we can't), I believe I would have bought the old Rockwell-Lefler Farm on Rt 549(Jobs Corners) and taught in the area as my grandfather and great Uncle Verne did.

Edgar Osborne said... Hi Matt: I attended Leroy School sometime in the late fortys. I was living on a foster home near East Canton. I lived with Judson Jud and Ethyl Perry on a their farm north of East Canton. I was 6 in 45 and would have been in First Grade in 45-47 (flunked first time). I remember three grades being taught in the same room.I remember the school, riding the bus to it and I have been to the school a couple of times in recent years. I am a resident of Tucson, Arizona but visit PA occasionally. I am in Berlin, Ohio today. In a couple of weeks we will be arriving in Athens PA for about six weeks of visitations. We do family genealogy and travel the Bradford County and neighboring countys seeking headstones of ancestors for photographing/ proofing of dates and existance. In 2002, I visited with a young man at the Lerow Grange who told me about this project. I have no pictures and not many memories that tell a story or anything like that, but I am interested in this project. Thanks you for what you are contributing.
Connie (Osborne) Gleason said... Hi Matt, I'm Edgar Osborne's sister. I too was a foster child on the Judson Perry farm along with Laurence Butchie our little brother. I went to first and second grade and maybe more, (can't remember exactly) at LeRoy School as well. They had no kindergarden so I couldn't start school untill I was seven. Does any one remember going to one of the students houses to see the monkey go into outer space on one of those new fangled TVs ? The name Scotty Shedden comes to mind. Perhaps it was his house. Do not remember what year that took place. Wonder if the Sheddens are still in the area. It seems to me that the LeRoy School building looks different in the new photos that my brother and sister-in-law sent to me recently. I would love to see a photo posted on this site of it in 1945-50. Does any one remember opening the big doors and having a bible lesson? The lady had a felt covered board and felt cutouts she applied to the board. Also the weekly reader was read to us in class also. I really enjoyed that. Our teacher read a chapter or two from The Yearlin daily and otherbooks too. I know that is where I learned to love reading. Remember getting milk in real milk bottles every day at school. I remember pretty little Blond girl Irene ? who had a unique gadget she could stick into an orange and and drink the juice from it. She must have been Scotty,s age because she sat to my left and forward by the windows. That's where the big kids sat. Would love to read more messages about other students experiences at LeRoy School. Just hope I don't get this back corrected and graded. I live in Payson Arizona now. Connie
Mitzie (Mosher) McIlwain said... Hi Connie, I lived on the Victor Morse farm and my name is Mitzie Mosher McIlwain. I do remember the Sheddens, and yes Scot still lives in the area. I was 5 in 1945 so your brothers age? We use to go to the Sheddens to swim and to Tracy Stones to watch the world series. There were three rooms in our school, Mrs. Chapel in first and second, Mrs. Baldwin in third and fourth and Mr. Holcomb in fifth and sixth. Miss Nelly from child evangelism came for Bible study.I have four or five pictures I will send down to Matt. You and your brother may be in the pictures. Oh and the girl with the orange squeezer , may be Irene Pierce who lived on the back side with her grandparents. Our Mothers got them at Stanley parties, as a free gift. Hope I answered some questions for you. The name sounds very familar, perhaps you rode to Sunday school with us?

Linda Mutzer said... Do you have any more info on Ida D Morse? Her parents or siblings? or children?
Anonymous said... Hi Linda, I was pleased to see your reply and hoping that you have information on this family. I have searched for Ida D's parents, but was never able to find them. She married Samuel Kerr in about maybe 1847, but she died the following year or two. I was thinking perhaps she died in child birth, which happened alot. She is buried in the Brooklyn, PA cemetery with Samuel and his second wife. She had no children that I could find. I don't have my notes right here, so am not sure of the dates, but do believe that he was back with his family for the 1850 census. Do keep in touch and let me know if you have anything about this family. Pat Benfer

June 6, 2005 - Rockwell/Hinman/ Beach/Lefler
Oscar Rockwell and Charles Lefler had a company about 1869 and did something--maybe built the Lefler house on Route 549 one mile East of Jobs Corners. I would like to know!! However, Charles Lefler bought the house but died in 1872 and Oscar finished medical school and went to Monroeton to marry the Hinman girl and be a doctor there. Oscar had a brother who married the Hinman girls's sister and then had a large factory in Monroeton. And Oscar's little sister Ella Rockwell married Charles' son Mark James Lefler. They then took over the farm on 549 near Jobs Corners. Oscar's bother had a daughter who married Coly Beach of Mansfield and who had the store there. Coly's brother was Newton Beach who married Carrie Carley of the Carley farm on Jobs Corners. They had poultry farms. Coly's children were the famous Beach Boys(all Rockwell descendents). One of them was Horace Beach, a Rockwell cousin and friend of my Grandfather Mark Rockwell Lefler(Brother of Verne Myron Lefler)--sons of Ella Rockwell, sister of Oscar. My grandfather Lefler married Hattie Carley, sister of Carrie Carley Beach. I would like to know more about these Myron Rockwell descendents whom I have just referred too. Did they have children? in New York City? Who built that Lefler farm house? Bob Lefler lefler@northnet.org

I am also descended from Elkanah Roby, through his son R.K. Roby, who lived in the Bradford County area. R.K. married Lucy Pamelia Lilley. My father also lived in Sayre and graduated from Sayre High School. He and his parents and my maternal grandparents are buried in Bradford County Memorial Park. I am ordering photos from you because I don't have any of the Lilleys. I know we are also related to the Ross and Morse families of Bradford County in the early days of settlement. I am glad to see that Albert Tell Lilley is still remembered. I would like to see his fossil collections some day. Elizabeth Roby
Comment: My connection is to Robert "bob" Lefler who has signed the guest book already. It is regrettable to mention that Robert passed away last summer at the age of 69 from cancer.
Comment: I worked the geology of the creek through Leroy and the creek draining Sunfish Pond; all in the 1960's.
